Drivers training permit 14 ½ to 17 years old
The following is the procedure and document requirements for obtaining a driver’s training permit.
 
You must decide and provide the examiner the name of the driver training school the student will attend, either a high school or a commercial driver training program. 
 
  The parent must bring the student to the driver’s license office with the following documents;

  • The student’s certified birth certificate
  • High school yearbook photo or high school ID card
  • Social Security card (or number)
  • Verification of Compliance form obtained from the student’s school administration. 
 
The parent must have a current ID or driver’s license to sign the liability form.  Step parents or other legal guardian must provide court appointed guardianship papers or a Power of Attorney document.  The cost for the permit is $21.50.
 
 
Upon the student’s completion of the driver training program, the process is as follows;
 
If the student is under the age of 17, a parent must accompany the student to the driver’s license office to sign a form stating the student has driven with a parent for a period of 6 months.  The student takes the written test for a class D license.  The written test is only offered between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM.  You must be called to the examiners station by 3:30 to take the test that day.  The fee for the test is $3.00. 
 
If the student passes the test, the Examiner will provide you with a list of road skills testers. An appointment needs to be made with one of them to complete the road skills test.  The fee for the road test is $17.50 which will be collected by the tester.  Upon completion of the road skills test the student will return to our office with a sealed envelope from the road skills tester. The student will be issued a driver’s license.  The fee for the driver license depending on their age, is between $15 and $25.
 
First time driver’s license age 17          
The parent must bring the minor to the driver’s license office with the following documents;
  • The minor’s certified birth certificate
  • High school yearbook photo or high school ID card
  • Social Security card (or number)
  • Verification of Compliance form obtained from the minor’s school administration.
  • The parent must have a current ID or driver’s license to sign the required liability form.  Step parents or other legal guardian must provide court appointed guardianship papers or a Power of Attorney document.

First time driver’s license over the age of 18
The following are the required documents to obtain a first time Idaho driver’s license or Idaho ID card.
  • Proof of Idaho residency such as mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bill, medical bill, bank statement, or pay stub.
  • Any driver’s license or identification card issued by any state.  
  • Social security card or number.
If you are not able to produce the above documents the following are required;  
  • Certified copy of your birth certificate
  • Your social security card or number
  • A qualifying photo such as a student activity card, yearbook photo, state ID, passport, or a photo transcript provided by a school administration
  • Proof of Idaho residency such as mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bill, medical bill, bank statement, or pay stub.

Ages 18-21 3 year license $25  
Age 20 1 year license $15  
Age 21 and over 4 year license $30  
Age 21 to 62 8 year license $55  

First time identification card over the age of 18
The following are the required documents to obtain a first time Idaho driver’s license or Idaho ID card.
  • Proof of Idaho residency such as mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bill, medical bill, bank statement, or pay stub.
  • Any driver’s license or identification card issued by any state.  
  • Social security card or number.
If you are not able to produce the above documents the following are required;  
  • Certified copy of your birth certificate
  • Your social security card or number
  • A qualifying photo such as a student activity card, yearbook photo, state ID, passport, or a photo transcript provided by a school administration
  • Proof of Idaho residency such as mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bill, medical bill, bank statement, or pay stub. 
Identification Card costs
Age under 18 Valid until 18 yoa $10
Age 18 to 21 Valid until 21 yoa $10
Age 21 or over 4 year ID card $10
Age 21 or over 8 year ID card $20

Documentation Required for 17 years and under

Documentation requirements are set by the Idaho Transportation Department and are subject to change to meet Idaho Code requirements

  • Certified copy of birth certificate.  If foreign born we require documents showing legal status, i.e. Permanent resident card, employment authorization card, passport with visa, as well as a school transcript with the student demographics (page listing parents names).

  • Social security card (or number is sufficient).  If a social security number has never been issued, then we require a letter of "Non-Issuance" from the Social Security Administration.

  • Verification of Compliance (a letter issued from the school administration proving the student is enrolled in an educational program).  This letter is required from either the school or GED program.

  • Parent or Legal Guardian present to sign liability for the child, the name of the parent must be listed on the birth certificate.  If the person present is not listed on the birth certificate, we require the legal documentation; i.e. guardianship papers, adoption papers, etc., that proves the adult has the right to sign liability.

  • Qualifying photo: student activity card, yearbook, state ID, passport ID (issued by the Department of Homeland Security), photo transcript (provided by the school with the seal and or embossment).

  • If under 17, you must enroll in and complete a drivers education program.  Before coming in to purchase a permit you must know the name of the school you intend to enroll in.

  • FOREIGN DOCUMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED, ALTERNATIVES ARE LISTED ABOVE

Documentation required for  18 Years and older

Documentation requirements are set by the Idaho Transportation Department and are subject to change to meet Idaho Code requirements.

  • Proof of Idaho residency: mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bills, bank/credit card statement, auto insurance.

  • Any drivers license or identification card issued by any state in the U.S. (If you are switching your license from another state, be prepared to take the knowledge exam)

  • Social security card (or number is sufficient).  If a social security number has never been issued then we require a letter of "Non-Issuance" from the Social Security Administration and proof of Legal Presence.

OR

  • Certified copy of birth certificate.  if foreign born we require documents showing legal status: i.e. Permanent Resident Card, employment authorization card, passport with Visa.  Starting July 7, 2008, all identification cards and drivers licenses will expire at the expiration of legal presence.

  • Social security card (or number is sufficient).  If a social security number has never been issued then we require a letter of "Non-Issuance" from the Social Security Administration and proof of Legal Presence.

  • Qualifying photo: student activity card, yearbook, state ID, passport ID (issued by the Department of Homeland Security), photo transcript (provided by the school with the seal and or embossment.

  • Proof of Idaho residency: mortgage papers, rental agreement, utility bills, bank/credit card statement, auto insurance.
