Sheriff Smith of Canyon County Awarded Executive Certificate from Post Academy
Local Sheriff Recognized for Dedication to Law enforcement Community
Director Jeff Black of Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy presented Sheriff Chris Smith
of Canyon County with a POST Executive certificate- the highest certificate awarded to peace officers in the state.
Sheriff Smith is the 24th Sheriff to earn the Executive level of certification.
"Sheriff Smith is an active leader and positive example in our community," said Black. "His dedication to the law
enforcement profession is evident and I am pleased to present this certificate to him."
Smith, a 1974 graduate of the Idaho POST Academy, began his career with Canyon County over 35 years ago as a
patrolman. In 1992 Smith was appointed Senior Criminal Deputy and later Chief Deputy. In 2004, Smith was elected as
the new sheriff.
Smith currently oversees 330 part-time and full-time employees, including detention services, and twelve volunteer
reserves.
In addition to his POST Executive and Master certificates, Smith is also a graduate of the Northwestern University
School of Police Staff and Command and the National Sheriff Institute. In service and leadership to the local law
enforcement community, Smith functions as the vice-president for the Idaho Sheriff's Association and serves on the
Idaho Department of Corrections Standards and Training Council. Smith is also an active member in his community as
both an Elks and Kiwanis member.
The presentation will be made 3/31/2008 at the Canyon County Courthouse meeting room.
About POST: The Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy ensures the professional integrity of all
Idaho criminal justice professionals including: patrol, adult and juvenile corrections, detention, and probation and
parole officers. All Idaho peace officers are trained and certified at POST. The POST Academy is located in Meridian,
Idaho. It was established in 1970.
POST currently certifies approximately 1,400 Idaho criminal justice professionals each year.
