    Auction of surplus property Aug. 7

    Canyon County will hold a public auction at 10 a.m. Aug. 7, selling a variety of surplus county property. The auction will be held at 623 Albany Street, which is the former site of Irrigator’s Lumber Company, beginning at 10 a.m.

    Four Canyon County Sheriff's Deputies have graduated from Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Detention Academy #52. Nicholas Whitney, MaryAnn Hoagland, Ronald Hainke and Daniel Mills were honored along with 14 deputies from counties around Idaho.

    Jail bond will be on Aug. 3 ballot

    Aug. 3, Canyon County voters will have the opportunity to vote on a bond to build a new, 652-bed jail for the county. The $46 million bond needs a two-thirds supermajority to pass. Two failed bond elections each gained about 58 percent approval from the voters, but not the 66.67 required to pass.

    A citizens committee, led by Steve White of Nampa, recommended the Aug. 3 special election, to ensure federal assistance would be available to help defray interest costs on the bond.

    New telecommunications system operational for Canyon County emergency responders

    According to 19 public safety agencies in Canyon County, the new 700 MHz radio system is a success. The new radios allow emergency responders from any Canyon County department to talk directly to the others, as well as all the agencies’ dispatch centers. Under the old UHF and VHF systems, different departments and dispatchers could not talk directly to each other. Even in the same jurisdictions, law enforcement couldn’t talk directly to fire personnel.
