Delinquent property owners given notice of hearing11/20/2009

Properties which have unpaid property taxes for 2006 may be returned to the county if taxes and fees are not paid. The Board of County Commissioners will hold a hearing at 9 a.m. Nov. 20, and the County Treasurer will issue a tax deed on each unpaid property at that time. Courthouse open until 5 on Fridays11/5/2009

The courthouse has reverted back to regular business hours, after several months of closing early on Fridays. Beginning Oct. 2, courthouse offices will be open until 5 p.m. on Fridays.

Trick or Treat Friday at courthouse10/30/2009

To celebrate Halloween, the Canyon County Courthouse will be decorated for the holiday, and will host trick-or-treaters Friday, Oct. 30, from 2-4 p.m. Employees donate treats, which are provided to children during the afternoon. Employees are also welcome to dress in costume for the day.

Public invited to test of ballot tabulation equipment10/27/2009

In compliance with Idaho Code 34-2417 of the Idaho Election Laws, a Logic and Accuracy test will be conducted at the Canyon County Election Office at 1102 East Chicago Street in Caldwell on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m.  This test is conducted to demonstrate the proper function of the county’s ballot tabulation equipment. Candidates and the public are invited to attend.

Courthouse closed Oct. 1210/12/2009

The courthouse will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, in honor of Columbus Day. It will reopen for regular business at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Driver, vehicle license offices close early Sept. 309/30/2009

CALDWELL - The Canyon County Motor Vehicle and Driver’s License Office will close at 3 p.m. Sept. 30, so employees can do a year-end inventory, and prepare for the auditing process that occurs at the end of each fiscal year.
 
If you need a motor vehicle license, driver’s license, renewal, etc., please look on the QuickLinks portion of the county website, or plan to visit the office early on Sept. 30, or a different day.

Jail bond on Nov. 3 ballot9/17/2009

The Board of County Commissioners voted Sept. 1 to put a jail bond on the ballot Nov. 3. The bond, for $46 million, will cost taxpayers $32.94 per $100,000 of assessed valuation, before the Homeowner’s Exemption.

Clerk's Office to observe early closure8/28/2009

Beginning Friday, June 26, the Canyon County Clerk’s Office will close on Fridays at 4 p.m. The Clerk’s Office includes the following divisions: Recorder, Welfare, Elections/Passports, Auditing, and all Court Clerks. All of these offices will close at 4 p.m. with this exception: trials/hearings in progress will continue until adjourned.

Town Hall Meetings set on jail8/19/2009

Two Town Hall Meetings have been scheduled to gather input and provide information regarding jail issues.

The first meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the Public Meeting Room at the courthouse, and the second will be Wednesday, Aug. 26, in the Nampa City Hall Council Chambers. Both meetings will be from 6-8 p.m.

Dress in Western wear Aug. 18-22 in honor of Rodeo Week8/14/2009

The Board of Canyon County Commissioners has proclaimed Aug. 18-22 Caldwell Night Rodeo Week in Canyon County, and encourages all residents and county employees to dress in western wear during the week to show their support of the rodeo, which is celebrating its 75th year.

In a proclamation, signed Friday, the commissioners say that “by according special recognition to rodeo week, special recognition is in turn given to the history, values and future of our county.”

Canyon County Commissioner David Ferdinand has been named chair of the National Association of Counties Telecommunications and Technology Steering Committee for 2009-2010. Ferdinand has been a member of the committee for five years. His appointment was announced Tuesday, July 28, by NACo President Valerie Brown during the NACo Annual Conference held at Opryland in Nashville, Tenn.

More positive West Nile mosquitoes7/20/2009

The Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District is reporting two more positive West Nile Virus tests. Both of these results came from one trap located at Caldwell Ponds, Idaho State Department of Fish and Game fishing area. The trap contained 285 Culex mosquitoes. CCMAD started West Nile Virus response in this area over the weekend and will continue through the next couple of days. Follow-up testing will be conducted later in the week. This is the fourth reported West Nile Virus test for Canyon County. Follow-up testing on the previous announced locations on Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge and Parma have returned negative West Nile Virus activity.

County residents save $43,500 with Prescription Discount Cards7/15/2009

In just over four months of use, the Canyon County Prescription Discount Card has saved county residents more than $43,500 on their prescriptions. Since its introduction in mid-February, the card has been used 4,841 times by 2,278 people, who’ve saved an average of $9, or 22.39 percent on their prescriptions.

Assessor's Office to close early on Fridays7/13/2009

Beginning Friday, July 17, the Canyon County Assessor’s Office will close on Fridays at 4 p.m. This change is implemented in response to a resolution signed by the Board of County Commissioners in May, providing each employee one hour off per week, designated as an Employee Appreciation Hour. The employee appreciation hour was given in consideration for the 2.5 percent pay cut enforced earlier in the year.

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus7/6/2009

Mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus have been found in Canyon County. According to Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District Director Ed Burnett, a trap containing 95 Culex tarsalis mosquitoes testing positive was collected from a site on the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. Burnett said CCMAD has been monitoring a spike in the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes throughout the county over the past two weeks.

Bar association donates $1,000 to CASA7/1/2009

The Third Judicial District Bar Association donated $1,000 to the Court Appointed Special Advocates after a barbecue July 1 for members of the Third District Bar and Canyon County employees. The Liberty Bell Barbecue featured a 100-pound pulled pork sandwich on a 48-inch bun, as well as an opportunity for people to ring the courtyard bell for an additional donation.

New magistrate judges selected6/29/2009

Third Judicial District Administrative District Judge Juneal C. Kerrick has announced the selection of Dayo O. Onanubosi of Nampa as a Magistrate Judge for Canyon County and Brian D. Lee of Fruitland as a Magistrate Judge for Payette County. Mr. Lee and Mr. Onanubosi were selected from a field of 26 applicants at a meeting of the Third District Magistrates Commission in Caldwell,  June 26.

Property taxes due June 226/15/2009

Monday, June 22 is the last day for Canyon County property owners to pay 2008 second half property taxes without delinquent charges being added.

Treasurer's Office to close early on Fridays6/15/2009

Beginning Friday, June 26, the Canyon County Treasurer’s Office will close on Fridays at 4 p.m. This remedy is being implemented as the result of the resolution signed by the Board of County Commissioners in May which provided each employee be granted off 1 hour per week, designated as an Employee Appreciation Hour and in consideration of the 2.5 percent pay cut enforced earlier in the year to all county employees.

DMV to close early on Wednesdays6/15/2009

Beginning June 17, the Canyon County Motor Vehicles and Driver’s License offices will close at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Jett wins Idaho Association of Counties Scholarship5/28/2009

William Joseph Jett, a 2009 graduate of Vallivue High School, son of Steven and Janalyn Jett of Greenleaf, was awarded one of six Idaho Association of Counties scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year. Jett plans to attend Idaho State University to become a physician assistant, and will receive $800 to help pay for his college education.

The Canyon County Animal Shelter is now closed on Wednesdays, but will remain open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at its regular hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The Board of Canyon County Commissioners will consider signing a proclamation to declare May Drug Court Month in Canyon County Tuesday, May 19, at 4 p.m., during a Drug Court session.

Ribbon Cutting set at East Complex5/14/2009

A ribbon cutting will be held at the new Canyon County East Complex Monday, May 18, at 9:30 a.m.

The East Complex houses the new Driver’s License and Vehicle License offices for the county, and is located at 6107 Graye Lane in Caldwell, just off Happy Day Boulevard.

Motor Vehicle, Driver's License offices open in new location5/7/2009

The Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle services have opened their new location on Graye Lane.

The Motor Vehicles offices which had been located in the courthouse and at Midtowne Plaza will be combined in one location, and share space with the Driver's License office at the new Canyon County East Complex, formerly the Bureau of Labor, at 6107 Graye Lane in Caldwell. The new building, just off Happy Day Boulevard, is near the Mercado Center and the Canyon County Animal Shelter.

Ahaus retires after 31 years with county4/28/2009

Wednesday morning, the Board of County Commissioners will proclaim May 3-9 Building Safety Week in Canyon County.
 
The proclamation, which will be signed at 8:30 a.m., calls out the county’s continuing efforts to address the critical issues of safety, energy efficiency and sustainability in the built environment that affect our citizens, both in everyday life and in times of natural disaster, and expresses confidence in the work of building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, laborers and others in the construction industry who work year-round to ensure the safe construction of buildings.

Third Judicial District Administrative District Judge Juneal C. Kerrick announced today that 24 applicants will be considered for the Magistrate Judge position in Canyon County and 20  applicants will be considered for the Magistrate Judge position in Payette County.

Lake Lowell opens for the 2009 boating season April 154/13/2009

Canyon County Parks, Recreation and Waterways, the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office and Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge wish everyone a safe first day of boating at Lake Lowell and a safe and fun time boating throughout the 2009 boating season. Boating at Lake Lowell begins at sunrise on Wednesday. Boat ramps are open at Lake Lowell Park on the Upper Dam, The West End of the Upper Dam and the Lower Dam Recreation Area.

County employees, Elected Officials see pay cut4/6/2009

Canyon County Commissioners and Elected Officials met Monday morning to discuss ways to cut payroll which would have the smallest impact on county employees, taxpayers and county operations.

County's response to ACLU filing March 273/27/2009

It has come to Canyon County’s attention that the ACLU has filed a motion for preliminary injunction with the federal district court. The ACLU’s attorneys have not provided the Commissioners or the county attorneys a copy of the motion, and therefore Canyon County cannot respond with any specificity with respect to any allegations made by the ACLU.
 
However, it is believed that this motion for preliminary injunction is related to the ACLU’s current complaint in federal district court alleging cruel and unusual treatment of inmates.

In its first month of availability, 61 Canyon County residents used the NACo Prescription Drug Discount Card to save nearly $700 on prescription costs, for a savings of 19.35 percent.

Hearing set to consider raising copy fees3/20/2009

Canyon County Board of Commissioners will hold a hearing at 10 a.m. April 8 to discuss increasing copy fees at county facilities.

The purpose of the hearing will be to gather information and hear public input on the proposed increases; from 15 cents to 30 cents per copy for coin-operated copy machines, and from 5 cents to 10 cents for other non-assisted copies. It will be held in the Commissioners Meeting Room.

Juvenile Detention Officers win National Award3/20/2009

The Board of Canyon County Commissioners is pleased to announce that Juvenile Detention Officers Linda Latham, Craig Olsen and Supervisor Kelly Torrey have been selected to receive Bob Rader Awards from the National Juvenile Detention Association. The Rader Awards recognize the significance of line staff workers and detention services professionals on the lives of at-risk and delinquent youth. All three work for the Southwest Idaho Juvenile Detention Center.

Juvenile Probation looks for volunteers3/16/2009

The Canyon County Juvenile Probation Department is looking for volunteers for the Canyon County Accountability Board, a volunteer-driven organization which takes first-time juvenile offenders and diverts them from the over-burdened court system to address their “at-risk” behaviors.

As part of a proactive approach to avoid a non-attainment designation from the Environmental Protection Agency, local elected officials from across Canyon County are hosting a business-specific training in March, titled “Reducing your Emissions.” The targeted businesses include paint shops, dry cleaners, auto body shops, machine fabrication and finishing, print and publishing, electronics and any other entities that use solvents or solvent-based cleaners that can be precursors or contributors to the creation of ozone.

Canyon County has launched a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county is making free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

Seven laid off from Development Services Department2/24/2009

As the result of a dramatic decline in construction, and development-related growth, Canyon County Commissioners Friday announced the layoff of seven employees in the county’s Development Services Department.

“In these economic times, Canyon County must make changes to how it does business,” said Commission Vice-Chair Steve Rule.

Canyon County adds gang prosecutor2/20/2009

The Board of County Commissioners Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with Treasure Valley Partnership which will allow the Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to house a Special Assistant United States Attorney who will federally prosecute people accused of gang-related violence, controlled substance and firearms offenses which occur in the Treasure Valley.

County rezone meeting set for Jan. 291/28/2009

Canyon County’s Development Services Department is working on rezoning portions of the county to make it easier for businesses to locate there.
 
Most of the areas under consideration are along the main transportation corridors and state highways, and several already have businesses in the area.

Ferdinand, Rule lead Board1/20/2009

The Canyon County Commissioners Jan. 12 re-elected David Ferdinand to be the board’s chairman, and elected Steve Rule as vice-chair. Ferdinand has served as commissioner for 4 1/2 years, after being appointed to fill the last months of Todd Lakey’s term. Rule is beginning his third year on the board. Commissioner Kathy Alder took office Jan. 12, and is serving a two-year term.

Special Olympics Torch makes way though Idaho, Canyon County1/20/2009

The Special Olympic Law Enforcement Torch Run will be in Canyon County Feb. 5 and 6, and the public is invited to several events prior to the opening of the World Winter Games Feb. 7.

Wednesday meeting to discuss alternate transportation routes1/8/2009

A public meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, to gather input and collect opinions from the public regarding proposed transportation corridors through Canyon County, specifically regarding the proposed Western Route Corridor, projected to align with the Kuna-Mora Corridor in Ada County.

New location for swearing-in of new elected officials1/8/2009

The swearing-in ceremony for newly-elected officials will be held in the Public Meeting Room on the first floor of the courthouse, instead of in a third-floor courtroom as previously planned.

The ceremony begins at 9 a.m., and four people elected to county office in November will be sworn in. Those include commissioners Kathy Alder and Steve Rule, Prosecutor John Bujak and Sheriff Chris Smith.

The State of Canyon County Address will be held Feb. 3 at Middleton Middle School Gymnasium, and commissioners are seeking interested businesses to sponsor the event.

Beebe honored at retirement reception1/5/2009

Canyon County Commissioner Matt Beebe will be honored at a reception Friday, Jan. 9, which is also his last day in office.

The reception will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room at the courthouse. Beebe has been the commissioner for District 2 since 2000.

County passes Non-Contained Load Ordinance12/31/2008

The Board of County Commissioners passed an ordinance Dec. 31 that requires loads to be contained while traveling on public roadways in Canyon County.

Mosquito Abatement districts consolidated12/24/2008

Canyon County Commissioners signed a resolution Dec. 23, which will consolidate the newly-formed Canyon County Vector Control District, and the Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District, under the direction of the Mosquito Abatement District Board of Directors.

Commissioners consider revising ordinance on non-contained loads12/23/2008

Canyon County Commissioners will hold a public hearing  at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, to consider amending three ordinances into what would become a non-contained load ordinance that would match what other jurisdictions in the Treasure Valley have adopted and are considering.

Holiday courthouse closures12/5/2008

The Canyon County Courthouse will close early on Christmas Eve to allow employees to spend more time with their families on the holiday. The courthouse will close at 3 p.m. Dec. 24, and remain closed Dec. 25, but will reopen during regular business hours on Friday, Dec.  26.

The following week, the courthouse will be closed Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day, but will be open regular business hours Dec. 31 and Jan. 2.
