The Board of County Commissioners will consider a resolution calling for a bond election for a new jail at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Commissioners have been discussing the possibility of a $46 million bond election, and had two public meetings this week to discuss options with the public. They will now consider whether to put the bond on the ballot for Nov. 3.
Federal incentives to help lower the bond’s interest rates are available should a bond pass. With these incentives, experts estimate the county should have about a 2.88 percent interest rate on the bonds, and a levy rate of .000329438, which would cost the median homeowner in Canyon County $21.41 per year.
The proposed jail would hold 652 inmates, and be operated by the staff currently working at the existing county jail facilities. Space is available on-site for additions in the future, which would give the county the capacity to hold more than 2,000 inmates, if needed.
Tuesday’s meeting will be held in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room on the ground floor of the courthouse.
