About Canyon County's Reverse 911 System
Canyon County has implemented a Reverse 911 Community
Notification System. The Reverse 911 system allows the Canyon County 911
Center to rapidly notify residents and businesses by telephone. In the event of an emergency or
disaster, an operator in the 911 Center can identify the affected neighborhood
or region of the County. The dispatcher will record a message that describes
the situation and recommends the protective actions residents should take.
The Reverse 911 system will automatically make calls out to all listed
telephone numbers within that geographic area and deliver the recorded
message. If phone lines are busy, the system will attempt to redial those
numbers a predetermined number of times to make contact. If an answering
machine picks up the call, the emergency message will be left on the machine.
Benefits of Signing Up For Reverse 911
Reverse 911 allows you to receive emergency notifications that affect
your home very quickly. You don't have to purchase any new equipment
and you'll only be notified of emergencies that affect the area
your home is located in.
Phone numbers are supplied by the phone companies to the Reverse 911
system each year to update the database. If a citizen or business
moves or changes a phone number between phone company updates, they
will need to notify the 911 Center to make sure their information is
up to date in the system. The numbers supplied by the phone company
do not include Cellular, Voice Over Internet (VoIP) or TTY/TDD
numbers, so those people that wish to be notified in an emergency
will need to supply these number(s) to the 911 Communications center.
Additionally, if a person or business does not wish to be notified in
an emergency, they can request that their number be removed from the
database. It is not necessary to submit any currently published
land-line phone numbers.
