Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue was recently elected to serve as the 3rd Vice President on the National Sheriffs’ Association’s (NSA) Executive Committee. Donahue was elected by sheriffs from across the nation during the NSA’s Annual Conference in Phoenix this past week. Donahue’s election makes him the first Idaho sheriff ever to be elected to a leadership role in the association’s 81-year history. His election as 3rd Vice President also puts him in line to become President of the National Sheriffs’ Association in 2024.
“Sheriff Donahue has been a tremendous asset to the NSA during his time as Canyon County Sheriff,” said Sheriff Vernon Stanforth, current NSA President and Sheriff of Fayette County, OH. “His leadership on a number of our committees hasn’t gone unnoticed by our members, and his passion for issues like domestic violence, border security, and governmental affairs has been instrumental in our discussions with policymakers in Washington, D.C. He has always represented Idaho well on the national stage, and he now becomes the first-ever sheriff from Idaho to serve on the NSA’s Executive Committee.”

Sheriff Donahue was elected as Canyon County Sheriff in 2012 and is currently in his third term leading the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office. Donahue has been a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association since 2013 and was elected to the NSA’s Board of Directors in 2019. During his time with NSA, Sheriff Donahue has served on multiple committees, including Border Security, Domestic Violence and Crime Victim Services, Government Affairs, Western States Policy, and Youth Programs and Juvenile Justice.
“I am both honored and humbled to be chosen by my fellow sheriffs to serve on the NSA’s Executive Committee. My ability to provide an Idaho and western perspective on some of the major issues facing law enforcement across our country will be of paramount importance, especially when it comes to the issue of smuggling illegal narcotics into the interior of our country by Mexican cartels, which has become a national security issue,” added Sheriff Kieran Donahue. “I was frankly surprised to learn that I was the first Idaho Sheriff to be elected to a leadership role in the NSA since it formed in 1940. That said, I’m excited that we as a state have a seat at the table when it comes to national discussions. This is not a role I will take lightly, and I hope to make my fellow Idahoans and Idaho law enforcement colleagues proud.”
